AnswerView source ↗
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) The government is committed to constructing a bulk liquids berth in the port of Dampier in time to meet the export needs of its first customer, Burrup Fertilisers Pty Ltd. The outstanding growth in construction activity in Western Australia provides a number of project management challenges across the state. The Dampier Port Authority is working closely with Burrup Fertilisers to ensure that the berth coincides with its export timings. Burrup Fertilisers is also experiencing its own project delays and has worked collaboratively with the Dampier Port Authority to ensure that the state does not incur unnecessary additional costs for project acceleration when it, the customer, is not yet ready to export its products. (2) The government receives regular reports on the discussions between Burrup Fertilisers and the Dampier Port Authority in relation to project timings, and the parties have worked cooperatively to set a project timetable that works for both parties. This collaborative approach is very commendable. (3) The Dampier Port Authority and Burrup Fertilisers have a good working relationship, and have regularly reviewed the respective progress of both projects since April 2004. Both parties have agreed that a completion date in late November 2005 will meet the customer’s expected export date of late December 2005-early January 2006. (4) The current expected completion date is November 2005.
