The Department of Training is currently promoting apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities to employers and school leavers and their parents, to facilitate the creation of an additional 800 apprenticeships and 800 traineeships by small business and industry over the next four years. Employers are responsible for selecting their apprentices and trainees, including the age and qualification level desired (if any). The end of the school year is a peak recruitment time for employers who generally target school leavers. This is supported by Western Australia’s high proportion of young people aged 15 to 19 years in apprenticeship and traineeship training compared to that of other States.
