Minister for Police:
I refer to the minister's
announcement on 17 October 2023 of the launch of a consultation paper on
proposed reforms to firearms laws.
(1) Has the
minister been briefed on the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia's Review of the Firearms Act 1973 (WA): Project 105 final report ?
(2) Are any of the proposed reforms
inconsistent with recommendations in that report?
(3) If yes to (2), which ones are
inconsistent and why has this been done?
(4) Has the
government initiated a detailed analysis and assessment of the policy surrounding
mental health and access to firearms in accordance with recommendation 50?
(5) If yes to (4), will the
minister table this analysis and assessment?

The Western Australia Police Force advise the following.
(1) Yes.
(2)–(3)
The proposed reforms are informed by the recommendations from the 2016 Law
Reform Commission's review and the 2017 National Firearms Agreement.
More information will be provided to the honourable member on 7 November 2023.

A working group composed of representatives from the WA Police Force, the
Mental Health Commission, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
and other stakeholders has been established to investigate the most effective
process for health assessments. The government will consider the working group's
recommendations as part of the rewrite of the Firearms Act 1973.
