POLICE — ARMADALE
257. Dr A.D. BUTI to the Minister for Police:
I have a supplementary question. Given that there is such an
overwhelming need for increased policing in Armadale and surrounding areas,
what plans does the minister have to ensure that there is not a return to the
high crime rate in Armadale and lengthy wait times for police attendance —
Point of Order
Mr T.R. BUSWELL : I
am reflecting my understanding of supplementary questions as provided for under
standing orders, and this most certainly does not appear to be one.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, carry on.

Dr A.D. BUTI : I
will repeat the question. Given that there is such an overwhelming need for
increased policing in Armadale and surrounding areas, what plans does the
minister have to ensure that there is not a return to the high crime rate in
Armadale and lengthy wait times for police attendance once Operation Carambola
winds up?

I am very pleased that the member has mentioned Operation
Carambola, because directly in response to representations to me at the
community forums that I have attended in Armadale in the past, I put to police
that they needed to put a better effort into Armadale. More police officers
have been put into Armadale Police Station, which operates 24 hours a day.
Dr A.D. Buti : For
three months.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : There is policing out of Armadale Police Station 24 hours a
day, seven days a week.
Dr A.D. Buti : What
are you going to do after three months?
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : Additional officers are operating on roster out of Armadale
Police Station. In addition, we have put an escalated police presence into
Armadale precinct through Operation Carambola. Up to 48 officers will be
stationed in and around Armadale to respond to calls from the community. Some
of those officers will be present at the community forum that I will attend
with the Commissioner of Police to ensure that people's concerns about
their streets can be brought to the attention of the police officers who are
able to action a response.
Dr A.D. Buti : What
are you going to do after three months?
The
SPEAKER : Member for Armadale, I now call you to order for the third time. I
know you are passionate about this. Minister, if you intend to answer the
question that the member for Armadale has asked, answer it; otherwise, can you
please wind up.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : This government has committed to 550 additional police
officers and a $67 million program to allow for upgrades to accommodation for
police officers specifically in the metropolitan locations where they will be
required. I would like to put on the record that members opposite did not put
one cent towards Armadale Police Station.
Dr A.D. Buti : What
are you going to do in Armadale after three months?
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, I have called you three times, and you know what happens
after three times. Minister, if you are prepared to answer the question that
the member for Armadale has asked, answer it; otherwise, wind up your answer.
Dr A.D. Buti interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale!
Dr A.D. Buti interjected.
Suspension of Member Ruling
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, I am going to read standing order 48 —
A member whose conduct has made it
necessary for the Speaker to formally call that member to order more than three
times in the course of one sitting for a significant breach of the rules may,
by order and at the discretion of the Speaker, be suspended from the service of
the Assembly until the adjournment of that sitting.
Can you please leave the chamber.
Dr A.D. Buti : You
have no interest in Armadale. You're a disgrace, minister!
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale!
[The member for Armadale left the chamber.]
Mr P.C. Tinley interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Willagee, I call you to order for the second time.
