TOWN OF CAMBRIDGE —
MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT — SHOW-CAUSE NOTICE
809. Mr S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Premier:
Given
that a Supreme Court justice ruled that the Minister for Local Government had
no basis for issuing a show-cause notice to suspend the Town of
Cambridge, why has the Premier not sacked the minister for blatant
incompetence?

This
has given me the opportunity to talk about the Minister for Local Government
and the outstanding job that he does. The Minister for Local Government and I are
good friends. We have known each other now for about 26 years. He has
been an outstanding member for Mandurah and a minister in two governments. He
is much loved in the Peel community, very
loved in Mandurah and Dawesville, and well liked in Pinjarra and Waroona. He is
even popular in Rockingham. I remember going to see him when he used to
perform at the Rockingham Hotel 25 years ago in a band called the Halls Head
Hippies. They used to perform in the beer garden there and I used to observe
his movements and his singing, which was something else!
The SPEAKER : It was something
else, all right!
Mr M. McGOWAN : He has been an
outstanding minister and Leader of the House. He is well liked by all sides of
this chamber. The member's question is mean-spirited and nasty. I do
not think I have ever known anyone in this chamber to be better liked on both
sides than the member for Mandurah; Minister for Local Government.
Mr P. Papalia : And John
McGrath!
Mr M. McGOWAN : The member for
South Perth is well liked on this side! The member for South Perth is a terrific
member for South Perth. His values are good, but I think he is a little bit
lost in his own political party.
Getting back to the member for
Mandurah, he has done an outstanding job. As local government minister, I have attended many local government conferences with
him. He was well liked at those events. He has a history of reform in local
government in the Local Government Act. His heart is in local government and he
genuinely respects people who are elected to local government and people who
work in local government. Like me, he is an ex-deputy mayor. We were both
deputy mayors at the same time—he for Mandurah and me for Rockingham—and
we worked cooperatively to try to bridge the differences between our two
communities. He has done an outstanding job.
In
terms of the recent events at the Town of Cambridge, the minister set up the
circumstances and explained it well yesterday.
