As at 16 June 2015:
(1) No other State has been as proactive, or implemented such a comprehensive program as WA, to help mitigate collisions with cattle on their respective road networks.
(2) In September 2012 Main Roads WA established The MRWA Advisory Group for the Management of Straying Livestock in Pastoral Regions. The group includes members from the Pastoral Lands Board, Pastoralists and Graziers Association, and State and Local Government Agencies.
The Government has allocated $12m from 2013/14 over 4 years to fund initiatives.
Some initiatives:
• Moving watering points further back from the road-side
• Installing one way cattle gates
• Improving Livestock Warning Signage and fencing standards along road reserves.
• Funding replacement fencing where it is deemed a "hot spot"
• Radio safety campaigns are aired throughout Regional WA from January 2013 for Christmas, Easter, School Holidays.
• Contributes 50% to the cost of installing new fences along the highways where there has been no previous fencing
(3) Main Roads WA can provide statistics relating to incidents involving cattle within WA on our state roads. Comparison with other states involving cattle cannot be provided as other states do not necessarily define the animal hit within their statistics.
