LOWER SOUTH WEST, STORM DAMAGE
(1) Given the ministerial statement today of the disastrous storms, hail and heavy rain affecting large areas of the lower south west resulting in damage to crops, roads, and fencing, do these events qualify the area to be declared a disaster area? (2) If so, is consideration being given to a declaration being announced when the damage has been fully assessed? Hon KIM CHANCE

(1)-(2) In short, the answer to the second question is possibly yes. That is one of the reasons why in the ministerial statement I announced that I had asked the Department of Agriculture to ascertain the facts of the matter. In a sense we are lucky - if we can call it that, it is difficult to describe this in any sense as good fortune - that the National Rural Advisory Council committee is in Western Australia carrying out survey work for the exceptional circumstances application. As I advised in the ministerial statement, I have asked Dexter Davies to liaise with NRAC to determine whether that is the case. I should be able to give the member an answer next week with a greater degree of certainty.
