FORRESTFIELD–AIRPORT
LINK
637. Ms
R. SAFFIOTI to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the minister's comments about funding for
the airport rail project when he said, ''Yes, the state government is
currently negotiating both tenure arrangements and the potential for any
contribution with Perth Airport.''
(1) Did the
minister make the Premier aware of these negotiations before the minister
claimed that Perth Airport would not make a contribution?
(2) Did he
make Perth Airport aware that he was in negotiations with it about making a
contribution?

I am really pleased members opposite keep raising the Forrestfield–Airport
Link because this will be a fantastic project for the people of Western
Australia. It is something I think we have every right to be very proud of. I
have been in discussions with Perth Airport and with the Premier. We have
discussed the ability for Perth Airport to make contributions towards what we
are doing. The Premier clarified things by saying that it was not about
financial contributions. However, we are looking at a number of things that we
need to undertake. The opposition might not understand that under the lease
agreement Perth Airport controls the lease to the centre of the earth, so we
need to be able to tunnel underneath Perth Airport land. We are looking for
Perth Airport to allow us the right to do that. That is part of the
negotiations we are undertaking. This will be a world-class public transport solution
to the airport for the people of Forrestfield and beyond because they have not
been given an opportunity in this state to have a world-class public transport
solution and this government is delivering it.
