SOUTHERN RAIL LINK, PRELIMINARY STUDIES
I refer the minister to her repeated claims that preliminary studies indicate a direct route for the southern rail link will be used by at least 2 500 extra passengers a day, and ask - (1) When were the preliminary studies to which the minister referred carried out and over what period? (2) How many prospective commuters were surveyed in the course of these preliminary studies? (3) Will the minister table a copy of the preliminary studies including their terms of reference and their complete findings? Ms MacTIERNAN

(1)-(3) I find very touching the absolute faith that the member for Carine has in my abilities. Mr Speaker, as you would know, a question like that, including one that calls upon me to table a document, requires notice. Mr Barnett: You told us yesterday that you knew all about this. Ms MacTIERNAN: Yesterday when we debated this topic yet again, I quoted the studies that have been produced to date. I cited the study and the figures given for the elasticity of demand, and the relationship of demand to travel time. I am happy to produce a copy of the document I referred to yesterday. I do not have those papers with me because, as I said, the member for Carine did not give me notice of this question. I point out again that it is absolutely ridiculous to expect me to be able to recite the precise answer to a question like that without notice. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members, it is inappropriate for there to be so many interjections that I cannot give the call to the next member.
