With regard to Community Safety programs there is a significant amount of new and ongoing activity occurring in the Pilbara.  The State Government, through the Western Australia Police Office of Crime Prevention (OCP), has signed Community Safety Crime Prevention Partnerships with all Local Governments within the region.  From those partnerships Community Safety Crime Prevention Plans have been commenced and supported through OCP Partnership funding.  All are at different stages of development.
The Plans have identified youth issues and alcohol related antisocial and violent behaviour as two priority areas of concern for the region.  The WA Police Community Engagement Division (CED) will be working closely with the Child Abuse Unit and other agencies in Roebourne to address some of the complications for victims following abuse disclosure.  The CED is also currently working with the Aboriginal Justice Agreement Team to establish a specific Crime Prevention Community Safety Plan in the town of Onslow.
In the 18 month period from 1 July 2008 to 30 December 2009 approximately $133,000 in Community Safety and Crime Prevention funding have been approved for initiatives undertaken in the Pilbara Region.
Planning and funding activity by the OCP undertaken in Port Hedland, for example, has included the review of their Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan resulting in the funding of a number of crime prevention initiatives.  These initiatives include a quad bike security lock program, a community safety awareness promotion program and a music based youth diversionary program.
The OCP has also contributed their resources towards the Town of Port Hedland's CCTV Implementation Project through the provision of expert support and advice.  Designing Out Crime training services have also been provided within the region and, most recently, crime prevention audits were undertaken in the Karratha Town Centre focussing on CCTV and Designing Out Crime issues.
