EDUCATION FUNDING
20. Mr T.J. HEALY to the Premier:
I refer to the McGowan Labor
government's enormous investments in schools and education across Western
Australia. Can the Premier update the house on how this investment is
delivering new schools and education facilities for families in our growing
suburbs, including Southern River? Can the Premier advise the house how this
investment compares with the investment of the previous Liberal–National
government?

I thank the member for Southern
River. He is a former teacher at Southern River College, and we had a great
visit to that school the other day. Clearly, the member for Southern River
relates well to the education workforce.
We
want to make sure that in the suburbs and towns across Western Australia, our
schools have the best infrastructure, and that is why we are delivering modern,
world-class infrastructure across the length and breadth of Western Australia.
As I said, two weeks ago I went to Southern River College with the member for
Southern River. We are delivering some new state-of-the-art facilities with the
help of 190 local workers, including 37 apprenticeships. This project has been
put in place under our Western Australian Jobs Act. Across the suburbs this
year, work will start on five new primary schools—Harrisdale, Baldivis,
Yanchep, Southern River and Brabham. That is on top of construction already
underway on seven new schools, including Byford South East, Baldivis North,
Hammond Park, Banksia Grove and Caversham South. As members might know, we are
also building a significant new high school in the western suburbs to cater for
the needs of the growing population of the inner city in the western suburbs.
All of the people in Mt Hawthorn, Perth, Nedlands, Subiaco and the like will
have access to a state-of-the-art new school. In the regions, we are upgrading
schools in Albany, Collie, Broome, Bunbury, Carnarvon and Cape Naturaliste, and
Champion Bay Senior High School in Geraldton, with, from memory, $20 million or
thereabouts. The government is on track to spend $26.5 billion on education in
its first term. That is $4 billion more than the previous government spent in
its last term in office. We are spending more per student than any other state
in the commonwealth. We want to make sure that our kids and our education
workforce have the best facilities, and that is why we are doing all this
investment. We want to make sure they have the best education, and that is why
we are investing in new education assistants, new level 3 teachers, new
independent learning specialists and the like across the regions. The
government is doing this to ensure that, across Western Australia, we continue
to have the best education system in the country.
