LIVE EXPORT — LUMPY SKIN DISEASE
1266. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the Minister for Agriculture and
Food:
I refer to the recent drop in price
of live cattle exports to Indonesia triggered by concern amongst Indonesian
authorities around lumpy skin disease in Australian cattle.
(1) What policy responses is the
government actioning to support cattle farmers?
(2) Will these
policy responses involve a pivot towards encouraging more boxed beef
production, given the increase in boxed beef exports to Indonesia, ongoing
concerns around animal cruelty in the live animal trade, and the impending
federal government ban on live exports?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Lumpy skin
disease is not present in Australia. There is no evidence that the falling
cattle prices across Australia have been triggered by any biosecurity concerns.
(2) Not applicable.
