I refer to the training requirements for volunteer ambulance
officers in regional WA.
(1) What
medical–first aid training are volunteers required to have completed
before being permitted to serve as volunteer ambulance officers?
(2) What
driver training are volunteers required to have completed before being
permitted to drive ambulances in priority one emergency situations with lights
and sirens?
(3) What other
training, if any, must volunteers complete before being permitted to serve as
volunteer ambulance officers?

question.
(1) Volunteer
ambulance officers must complete level 1 base training that consists of the
following modules: module 1, patient assessment and vital signs; module 2a,
ambulance equipment; module 2b, ambulance driving; module 3, oxygen and oxygen
equipment; module 4, CPR and defibrillation; module 5, spinal care awareness;
module 6, basic medication awareness; and module 7, introduction to triage.
To maintain
this level, VAOs must complete the annual level 1 continuing education program.
(2) VAOs are
required to have completed the level 1 base training modules and be assessed by
an RAC instructor or St John Ambulance paramedic and volunteer development
officer that have participated in the RAC train the trainer program. Successful
completion of both elements is required prior to a VAO being permitted to drive
ambulances in priority one emergency situations.
(3) A training
prerequisite for VAOs is the successful completion of the Provide First Aid
course prior to commencing level 1 base training.
