PERTH AND PEEL STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT
258. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary representing the
Minister for Environment:
I refer to the discontinuation of
the strategic assessment of the Perth and Peel regions in December 2022, and
the prioritisation of native vegetation policy instead.
(1) Why has the
native vegetation policy not been updated since May 2022, given there is little
mention of the Perth and Peel regions and Swan coastal plain in the current
policy?
(2) How much of the $3.3 million
over two years to implement key actions has been spent?
(3) What progress has been made on action 3.1, ''WA
native vegetation extent dataset (WAVE)'', paragraphs (a) and (b)
respectively, in the implementation road map?
(4) If no progress has been made
for (3), why not?

Thank you, honourable member for
some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Environment, I provide
the following answer.
(1) Perth and
Peel regional planning is being progressed as an additional action under
strategy 1 of the native vegetation policy's implementation road map.
(2) It is $1.02 million.
(3) A three-year
WA vegetation extent mapping pilot is in progress, funded through the 2023–24
budget. The pilot is testing and developing
how automated mapping methods can be applied in the WA context to achieve a statewide mapping and monitoring product in future. As part of this pilot,
vegetation extent mapping is being updated for priority areas within the Swan
coastal plain and the wheatbelt regions.
(4) Not applicable.
