I refer the Minister to the recently revamped on-line tourism portal for Western Australia which now uses the internet address ‘www.westernaustralia.com’, and I ask -
(1) Can the Minister please inform the House of the cost of developing the new website?
(2) Was the domain www.westernaustralia.com previously owned by any other person or organisation, if so, what was the name of that person or organisation?
(3) When was the domain www.westernaustralia.com purchased to be used as the State’s main on-line tourism portal?
(4) From whom was this domain name purchased?
(5) What was the cost of purchasing this domain name?
(6) Did the Minister approve this expenditure?
(7) Which Government Department or Agency met the cost of purchasing the domain name www.westernaustralia.com?

The total cost of the redeveloped website ‘westernaustralia.com’ was $1.33m which has and will be expended over the 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 fiscal years.
This total cost includes development costs of $902,000 training and deployment costs of $135,000, replacement equipment costs of $51,000, new operating software of $78,000 and $165,000 of internal resource cost allocation over the three years.
The Western Australian Tourism Commission’s previous on-line presence included a consumer site ‘westernaustralia.net’ and an industry site ‘www.tourism.gov.au’, as well as some other campaign specific sites.
The Western Australian Tourism Commission is part of a national on-line initiative known as the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW). This data source is an aggregation of tourism product information across the country, which is used to feed data to ‘australia.com’. The previous technology used by Western Australian Tourism Commission was not directly compatible, dated in technology terms and costly to maintain. It was commissioned in 1998-99 and has remained basically unchanged until now.
Western Australian Tourism Commission is using the on-line environment to strategically place itself to better serve consumer needs, the needs of the industry and further promote Western Australia as a tourism destination under a ‘Tourism e-Marketplace Strategy’.
Tourism readily lends itself to the use of the internet for information distribution. Since the launch of ‘westernaustralia.com’, unique visitors to the site have increased by approximately 20% in comparison to the previous site.
In 2003 the monthly average for unique visitors was 44,800. Since the launch of ‘westernaustralia.com’ there were 54,000 unique visitors in April 2004 (up 21%), and 53,000 unique visitors in May 2004 (up 18%).
This on-line predominance will have a significant impact on the Western Australian Tourism Commission’s ability to undertake consumer direct marketing in targeted market segments and improve visitor numbers and duration of stay to Western Australia.
