Community safety—Hamilton Hill
439. Hon Maryka Groenewald to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to reports
of an assault against a student near an abandoned warehouse in Hamilton Hill,
following repeated complaints from nearby schools and families about antisocial
behaviour at the site and to statements that police have merely stepped up patrols
around the camp.
(1) Has the minister met with the
principals of nearby schools to discuss the matter?
(2) Has the minister met with the parents
of the child who was assaulted?
(3) Given that increased patrols are not
an acceptable long-term solution, what specific actions has the minister put in
place to ensure that this site is made safe?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(3) Following an incident at this site, the
member for Fremantle convened a meeting with Main Roads Western Australia, the Western
Australia Police Force and the school principal to discuss this issue and
identify solutions. Main Roads is the current site owner. The Western Australia
Police Force and the City of Cockburn are working cooperatively to resolve the
trespassing and antisocial behaviour issues at this site. Main Roads has
secured access points, repaired fencing and removed coverings that concealed
unauthorised activity within the site.
