I refer to an article in The West Australian on Saturday, 19 June 2004, the headline of which reads “Victoria poaches WA egg market”. The article refers to WA egg producers’ anger about Coles’ decision to stock eggs from Victoria rather than locally produced eggs. With this in mind, I refer also to the minister’s press release on 16 November 2003, the headline of which reads “Minister to launch Coles’ Buy WA First campaign”. (1) Will the minister confirm that, despite the fact that Western Australia is world-class producer of a complete range of grocery and consumer items, and despite the fact that Coles joined the Buy WA First campaign last November, the Western Australian Government has very little influence when it comes to ensuring that the practices of the supermarket duopoly assist producers and keep jobs here in Western Australia? (2) What action will the minister take over the recent revelation that Coles is purchasing eggs from the eastern States rather than from WA? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for State Development provides the following response - (1) I am surprised that the honourable member is critical of the government initiative designed to assist Western Australian producers grow their businesses. The Western Australian Government has significant evidence that its Buy WA First campaign is influencing both supermarkets and consumers. A survey conducted in May 2004 of over 5 500 individuals shows that 90 per cent were aware of this campaign, 99 per cent supported its objectives and 98 per cent said their purchasing decisions were positively influenced by the campaign. Western Australian businesses using the campaign logo have reported increases in sales of over 10 per cent. The Western Australian Government is satisfied with the level of support and cooperation it has received from Dewsons, Supa Valu, Action and Coles in the conduct of the campaign. (2) The Government has been advised that, in relation to eggs, 98 per cent of eggs sold in Coles stores in Western Australia are locally sourced. The vegetarian eggs, which represent one per cent of sales, are supplied to Coles through a national tender process covering more than 400 stores. The Department of Industry and Resources is already holding discussions with Coles with a view to Western Australian suppliers of vegetarian eggs becoming subcontractors to the prime contractor for supply in this State.
