OAKAJEE PORT MASTER PLAN
I refer to the recent release of the Geraldton Port Authority’s Oakajee port master plan. (1) Can the minister confirm that the June 2011 plan replaced a more substantial document that was not released? (2) Has the current plan been developed in response to the withdrawal, temporary or otherwise, of Sinosteel from its Weld Range mine development in Western Australia’s Mid West? (3) What other reasons can the minister advance for the release of such a brief planning document, particularly given its 30-year time frame? (4) When does the minister intend expanding on the current plan? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The Oakajee port master plan was developed as a reference point for reviewing the layout designs produced by Oakajee Port and Rail—OPR—and to ensure that decisions made today do not restrict the optimal future expansion of the Oakajee port. (2) No. (3) The Oakajee port master plan is an evolving document, and the version released by the Geraldton Port Authority represents a view as agreed between OPR and the government parties on the short and long-term development layout for the Oakajee port site. (4) The master plan is an evolving document and will be updated progressively as developments occur.
