I refer to the cancellation of specialist services during September in Merredin, as reported to me by residents of Merredin, and ask:
(a) is the Minister aware of the recent cancellation of specialist services in Merredin;
(b) was the cancellation of specialist services due to a shortage of nursing staff; and
(i) if not, what was the reason for the cancellation; and
(c) if specialist services are temporarily cancelled in a regional area, will the Minister undertake to allow Patients Assisted Travel Scheme assistance for affected patients to travel to a larger centre for a replacement specialist appointment; and
(i) if not, why not?

(a)
There was no cancellation of services in September 2010. Two theatre list days in early October 2010 were rescheduled as a result of not having appropriately trained staff available for a two week period due to staff being on either annual or parental leave. The arrangements were as follows:
Mr Wren - Orthopaedic Surgeon:
Theatre list of 5 October 2010 (five patients) was rescheduled to 2 November 2010. Mr Wren provided consultations on 5 October 2010.
Dr Lai - General Surgeon: Theatre list of 8 October 2010 (seven patients) was rescheduled to either 10 September 2010 or 2 November 2010. Dr Lai provided consultations on 8 October 2010.
All parties were notified well in advance of the rescheduling of services.
(b)
No.
(i) Refer to (a).
(c)
This was not an issue in this instance as alternative short term arrangements were put in place to ensure the lists would go ahead within a reasonable period.
