ESPERANCE PORT AUTHORITY - ENVIRONMENTAL OVERSIGHT
Yesterday the minister advised the house that she would seek to strengthen the environmental oversight of the Esperance Port Authority. Will the minister give the house an indication of the progress of this issue? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for Albany for the question. I am pleased to advise that Mr Michael Jackson has agreed to accept a position on the board of the Esperance Port Authority. Several members interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I am not sure whether he can sing, but Mr Jackson has very senior health and environmental experience. I am sure that he is known to members on both sides of the house. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! I thought that the member for Roe, at least, would want to listen to the minister. If members continually interrupt, I will cease question time. Do members understand that? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I am a bit disappointed that the member for Roe is not interested in listening to this. Mr Jackson may well be known to members because for five years he was the executive director of population health in the Department of Health. He also chaired the National Environmental Health Council, the Kwinana environmental health forum and the task force on the cancer rates of Alcoa employees. He is now an Adjunct Professor at Curtin University of Technology in health sciences. Mr Jackson’s appointment will bring much needed environmental health expertise onto the board of the Esperance Port Authority. I have told the chair of the board that as a matter of urgency the authority must strengthen the staff resources regarding the environmental management of the port. I anticipate that a new and more senior position will be created at the port at the first opportunity to make sure that the administration of these important matters reaches a higher standard.
