YOUTH DETENTION —
PRISON OFFICERS
1373. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to question without notice
1297 asked on 23 October. What are the qualifications required for a prison
officer to work in a youth custodial facility?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
Currently, prison officers are
appointed to work in youth custodial facilities in accordance with section 11E
of the Young Offenders Act 1994. Prison
officers undertake induction training as a requirement to work in a youth
custodial facility. They are also
required to obtain a working with children check. Additional training
requirements are proposed in the Young Offenders and Prisons Legislation
Amendment Bill 2024 that is currently before the Parliament.
