DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION — GRADUATE TEACHERS
254. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Minister for Education:
(1) How many graduate teachers had taken up teaching jobs at
the start of 2014?
(2) What
percentage does the number represent of the graduate applicants for teaching
positions in 2014?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) As of
Monday, 17 March 2014, 834 graduate teachers were employed by the Department of
Education. This is up from 660 graduates employed at the start of the school
year.
Day one of this school year saw the
greatest number of graduate teachers employed in a decade, and schools are
continuing to employ graduate teachers as new positions become available
through retirements, resignations and the commencement of new school programs.
At the end of the 2013 school year, 1 036 graduate teachers were working in
public schools, and it is likely that we will equal or exceed this number at
the end of 2014.
(2) The
percentage is 62 per cent. This is based on current information that 1 338
graduate teachers have applied for teaching positions through the department's
graduate teacher pool.
