(a) The boundary and size of the World Heritage area will be determined during the World Heritage nomination process; upon assessment and identification of the potential Outstanding Universal Value of the area and where World Heritage criteria are met. The boundary of the Dampier Archipelago National Heritage area, an area of about 36,860 hectares, will be used as the starting point for the World Heritage nomination process.
(b) The total cost of the World Heritage nomination is not yet known and will depend upon the extent of consultation, research and assessment required during the preparation of the nomination. In the 2017/18 budget, the State allocated $1 million per year until 2020/21 for the joint management and protection of the values of Murujuga, including to support the World Heritage nomination process. As World Heritage relates to Commonwealth statutory responsibilities, the Commonwealth also has a responsibility to contribute to the nomination process.
