HOMELESSNESS —
DEATHS
168. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Housing:
I refer to the article ''Tracking
deaths of people who have experienced homelessness: A dynamic cohort study in
an Australian city'' published in the British Medical Journal on
21 February 2024, which demonstrates a huge life expectancy gap between those
experiencing homelessness and the rest of the population.
(1) Is the WA government collecting data identifying
and monitoring deaths among WA's homeless population?
(2) If yes to (1), will the
minister commit to making this data publicly available?
(3) If no to (1), why not?
(4) Given George
Abraham was sent a letter by this government asking if he still needed housing
two years after his tragic death, what is this government doing to prevent the
deaths of public housing tenants who are evicted into homelessness?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following response has been provided by the
Minister for Housing.
(1)–(4) The
state government recognises the importance of quality and up-to-date data in
designing and delivering effective, long-term responses to homelessness and is
investing significantly to improve data collection and quality through the By
Name List and the Zero Project. It should be noted the By Name List captures a record
of acknowledgement of death. This data represents individuals in the inactive
list that have at any time been identified on the By Name List.
