(1) Has the Forest Products Commission conducted its own audit or received an audit from another source on how much jarrah is available from bauxite mine sites? (2) If yes, what is the estimated total volume of jarrah logs available from clearing for bauxite mining, expressed in either saw log volumes, gross bole volumes or tonnages for the years and/or areas for which the minister has data available? (3) Have the FPC trials on Alcoa’s Huntly mine site for Simcoa to purchase post-harvest jarrah residues been completed? (4) If yes, will the minister table log supply forecasts that have been drawn up as a result of the trial? (5) If yes, is the FPC developing plans to increase future grade and craft wood supplies from bauxite sites? If yes, please provide details. (6) If no, when will the trial results be available? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank Hon Chrissy Sharp for some notice of the question. (1)-(2) No. I refer the honourable member to previous questions on notice Nos 1280 and 779 of 11 November 2003 and 2 April 2003 respectively in which I advised that the Forest Product Commission’s systems are not designed to record timber volumes for bauxite mining areas because the FPC does not separate harvesting on mixed areas from concurrent harvesting of forests adjacent to the mined area; they are treated as one. (3) The trial that is taking place on the Willowdale minesite is not yet complete. (4) Not applicable. (5) In the normal course of its operations the FPC removes saleable timber, including feature grade and craft wood timbers from all harvested areas, including mine sites. (6) The trial is scheduled to be completed in February/March 2005, although this could be reviewed depending on the progress of the trial or other factors.
