I refer the minister to the Department for Planing and Infrastructure’s 2001-02 annual report, which was tabled in the House yesterday. It is stated at page 62 that - The busway has improved travel time and service reliability and carried 1.5 million passengers in the first three months of operation . . . (1) Given these figures, will the minister admit that the Kwinana Freeway busway has been an outstanding public transport success? (2) Given that construction work along the Kwinana Freeway is scheduled to begin around June 2003 - in about six months - will the minister advise when the express busway service will cease to operate in its current form? (3) Will the minister advise whether bus travel times will increase once our southern suburbs buses are forced into general traffic along the freeway; and, if so, by how much? (4) Will the minister also confirm that the Government intends to cancel all central business district-bound bus services from the southern end of the Mount Henry Bridge? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(4) The Government believes that the south west corridor requires a mass transit system. It does not believe that the bus network, which plays an important role, provides that mass transit system. In the interim, and as a short-term measure, the bus expressway has worked effectively. However, enormous growth is projected in the south west corridor over the next five years. Mr M.F. Board interjected. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The “let them use the buses” argument was used for the northern suburbs. The member for Murdoch can argue the point, but he will not get anywhere. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas: Why don’t you answer the question? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: I am answering the question. Mr M.F. Board interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, member for Murdoch! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The Government will provide the major transport corridor in the south west with a mass transit system. It will construct a train system that will have the ability to move the volume of people we need to move - Ms K. Hodson-Thomas: There will be major disruptions to the city for almost three years. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: Of course there will be disruptions. A Northbridge tunnel is not built without disruption. Nothing can be built without disruption. If the Opposition’s recipe for government is not to do anything, it will be on the opposition benches for a long time. Mr M.F. Board interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, member for Murdoch! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The Government was elected to get things done and that is what it will do.
