As the member may be aware, the section of Reid Highway between West Swan Road and Great Northern Highway has not yet been constructed. This road link is currently along Middle Swan Road, which is a 2.5-kilometre, low-standard, single-carriageway local government road with direct property driveway access. In contrast, the 5.7-kilometre section of Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and West Swan Road is a high-standard control-of-access highway with no direct property access. The government has made a commitment to extend Reid Highway from West Swan Road to Great Northern Highway to provide a high-standard link, and Main Roads has planning in progress to deliver this project. (1) The average weekday traffic volumes on Middle Swan Road between West Swan Road and Great Northern Highway are 25 500 vehicles a day, and on Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and West Swan Road the average is 20 500 vehicles a day. (2) For the reporting period 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2005, there were 336 reported crashes on Middle Swan Road between West Swan Road and Great Northern Highway, and 312 on Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and West Swan Road. (3) There was one fatality from one crash on Middle Swan Road between West Swan Road and Great Northern Highway, and on Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and West Swan Road there were six fatalities from three crashes.
