(1) Bentley Health Service has two state-wide inpatient units for children and adolescents.
· The Families at Work programme is a residential programme providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of children ages 8-14 years with severe emotional and behavioural problems, generally with prominent "externalising" features (conduct disorder/oppositional/defiant disorder, ADHD) in the context of multisystem dysfunction, who have been unable to benefit significantly from community based interventions.
· The Bentley Adolescent Unit is a state-wide specialised inpatient unit that provides assessment, containment during crises and ongoing management to adolescents.
Over each of the past three years, the number of children below the age of 13 who have been discharged from Bentley Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit are as follows:

1. Data have been compiled based on discharges (separations) rather than admissions.
2. 2007 data is preliminary.
3. Bentley totals may not add up as it is a count of the number of individual persons, rather than episodes of care. A person can be in both units during the year, however, will only be counted once in the Bentley Total.
4. Yearly data cannot be added together as data on an individual person can be included in multiple years.
5. Data includes figures for the Joondalup Mental Health Inpatient Unit.
(5) The WA Metropolitan Clinical Services Framework for health service planning has identified the need for an increase in child and adolescent mental health inpatient beds.
(6) At this stage, Joondalup is the nominated location for a total of 20 additional inpatient beds. The timeline for construction has not been finalised.
