CANNABIS
— LUNG CANCER
827. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer the minister to recent
government-funded research out of the University of California that suggests
that the lifetime risk of contracting lung cancer from regularly smoking
cannabis may be considerably lower than the risk for non-smokers.
(1) Given that
the paper also concludes that the use of vaping technology is a safe and
effective delivery system, alongside the findings that cannabis smoke exposure
is typically not associated with the same health consequences as tobacco
smoking, will the minister encourage her department to treat the three
scenarios—tobacco use, cannabis use and vaping in general—as
distinct, rather than lumping everything into one, unscientific response?
(2) If no, why not?
