BUSHFIRE - GINGIN BROOK ROAD
Before I ask my question, with your leave, Mr Speaker, I welcome on behalf of the member for Murdoch the year 9 students from the Winthrop Baptist College. I refer to the bushfire of 20 December 2002 on Gingin Brook Road in Gingin that destroyed two houses, a considerable area of farmland and horticultural businesses. Thirty-four residents suffered considerable financial and personal losses with some claims of losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. (1) Does the minister agree that Western Power has been identified as being responsible for the cause of the Gingin fire of 20 December 2002? (2) Does the minister agree that three years is an unacceptable delay for victims to receive fair and reasonable compensation from Western Power for their losses? (3) Will the minister now take immediate action to ensure that the remaining six fire victims, who have been battling for over three years, are compensated fairly and justly for their losses and allow them to get some normality back into their lives? Mr F.M. LOGAN

I thank the member for his question. (1) I am not too sure whether liability for the bushfire has been determined through court action, but I assure the member that I will find out whether Western Power’s Electricity Networks Corporation has acknowledged its responsibility. (2) I agree that three years is unacceptable, and I will follow that up for the member. (3) Yes, I will.
