(1) There are various Education Assistant classifications, each involving different duties.  Classifications and roles are as follows:
·
Mainstream
Employed in primary schools to assist teachers with the general care and well being of students as well as preparation and maintenance of the learning environment.
·
Special Needs
Assists teachers in the care of students with disabilities and learning needs including specialised programs such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy.
·
Ethnic Assistants
Provides support and assistance to minority group students who are recent arrivals to Australia, their parents/guardians, teachers, the school and the community through their knowledge, understanding and sharing of Ethnic history, language and culture.
·
Aboriginal Education and Islander Officer
Provides support and assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents/guardians, teachers, the school and the community through their knowledge, understanding and sharing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture.
·
Defence Force Transitional Aide
Facilitates the best possible educational outcome for the children of Australian Defence Force personnel through onsite, direct and flexible assistance to children, parents, teachers and other support services.
·
AUSLAN
Responsible for sign language interpreting and teacher directed tutoring according to the specific needs of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing student.
·
Braille
Responsible for assisting Blind or Vision Impaired students who use Braille as a main medium.
·
Primary Behaviour (formerly socio-psychological educational resource )
Provides support and advice to schools and teachers on the management program of students at risk under supervision of the Psychologist in Charge or other relevant professional.
(2) As at 13 November 2008 the Department of Education and Training employs 7625 Education Assistants (headcount), a full time equivalent of 5 734.82 and may include EAs on leave at this date.
(3) The contracts or modes of employment that apply are in accordance with industrial instruments and Public Sector policy. Employment is normally on a permanent basis. Fixed term and casual employment is used in the following circumstances:
(a) special projects; or
(b) to temporarily fill vacancies, where a decision has been made to fill that vacancy, whilst the recruitment process is undertaken; or
(c) to fill vacancies due to:
(i) parental leave;
(ii) long service leave;
(iii) personal leave;
(iv) worker's compensation;
(v) secondment; and
(vi) leave without pay.
(d) any other situations as agreed between the Employer and the Union.
