DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING - WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS
The Corruption and Crime Commission has said words to the effect that it doubts the ability of the Department of Education and Training to carry out the working with children checks. What will the minister do to make sure that these checks are carried out, given that the CCC reported that there are grounds for concern about the education department’s ability to keep schoolchildren safe from sexual contact from their own teachers and warned that this leads to an ideal environment for paedophiles to thrive in? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I do not intend to let this matter rest. As the honourable member would be aware, one of the first things I did was say that the six recommendations of the Corruption and Crime Commission are not negotiable; they will be implemented. I have already instructed the Acting Director General of the Department of Education and Training to put in place strategies and time lines for their full implementation. I fully expect that the work that was commenced by the CCC and the Department of Education and Training two years ago to make sure that the complaints management systems at the department can meet the challenges required of them will continue. I expect that it will continue in a much better way than it has worked in the past. Hon Ray Halligan : Are you going to check on it to make sure it’s working? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : The member can bet that I am going to check on it. I also want to put in place an independent person, somebody who is respected within the community, who will have the responsibility to make sure that it has been tracked. I can tell the honourable member that I intend to monitor it very, very closely. The events that have occurred that have led to the recommendations in the CCC report will not occur again.
