INDIA — PREMIER'S TRADE DELEGATION
967. Mr Y. MUBARAKAI to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
upcoming delegation to India. What will the Premier be promoting on the
delegation, and what will it mean for Western Australian jobs?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Jandakot for
the question. I announced yesterday that I will be leading a trade delegation to India next week. India is an important trading
partner for Western Australia. I would like to acknowledge the new Consul General of India, who is in the Speaker's
gallery today. I thank her for her assistance in organising the delegation's visit. We will be building on the visits by the Minister for Tourism and the
Minister for Education and Training, who have had a real focus on India because
it is a growing market for Western Australia. The delegation will have a focus
on tourism, international education, trade and investment, and will seek to
diversify the state's economy. It also recognises that India represents
an enormous opportunity for Western Australia. I will be joined by Mr Chris
Rodwell from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, Mr
Kevin Brown from Perth Airport, Mr Michael Carter from the Australia India
Business Council, and Ms Nicole Roocke from the Minerals Research Institute of Western
Australia. I will also be joined by Adam Gilchrist, who you may have heard of,
Mr Speaker. Yesterday we announced the visit with Adam, and he was terrific
value. He is loved in India; he is seriously loved. He tweeted about our visit.
I will read it out —
Hey India, heading over with our
Premier @MarkMcGowanMP next week.
[Interruption.]
Mr M. McGOWAN : Mr Speaker, I
will just take that and be back in a moment!
I will finish his quote —
His
first trip to your fascinating land. I know he will love it and hopefully you
will all love Perth, WA and it's regions when you get here in
the future.
That tweet from this morning has
now been liked by 2 469 people. He is seriously well liked in India, and I am
sure the fact that he is accompanying us on this visit will get a lot of
attention for Western Australia. I might also note that the Minister for
Tourism and I played some cricket with him yesterday, and I hit a few
boundaries and sixes because the Minister for Tourism's bowling was so
awful!
I would like to thank Adam for his
support for and assistance with this. We have the ICC T20 World Cup next year,
and I encourage Indians to come and see Perth and the T20 cricket being held
here in Western Australia. When we go to India I will launch our million-dollar
campaign to promote Western Australia as a destination, and encourage direct
flights between Perth and India and cooperative marketing campaigns and trade
education. In the last financial year, there has been 11 per cent growth in
visitor numbers from India, so our efforts in international marketing and the
promotion of Western Australia are clearly working. But we want to make it even
stronger and better, so for the first time in my life I will go to India next
week. I would like to thank Adam for accompanying us and thank the delegation
as well. I am sure and hopeful that it will be a very successful visit.
