(2) Because of concern among health authorities about the effects of passive smoking on children, will the minister encourage other councils to follow the example set by Melville City Council? (1)-(3) The member approached me last week about this question but I did not realise she had submitted it. At that stage, when I approached the minister, which was after question time, he indicated in answer to the first part of the question that he was not aware of the matter. However, now he obviously is because the member had asked the question. I did not come in with an answer today, but I presume that the issue, as I discussed it last week with the minister - he did not give me a formal answer - is that the matter rests with local government, and it is up to local government to make those decisions. However, the minister indicated that he is sympathetic to councils who wish to take such steps.
