ELIZABETH
QUAY WATER PARK — WATER TESTING
72. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Planning:
I have a supplementary question. Is the Minister for Planning
confirming today that the only valid test results he had when the water park
was opened were those that showed that there was concern about water quality
and that there were amoeba in the water?

AnswerView source ↗

As I explained in debate earlier today, on Thursday, 28 January,
the day before the water park was opened, a test result identified
non-disease-causing amoeba in the discharge pipes. Therefore, there was no
possibility of any water from the discharge pipes coming into contact with any
people using the park. The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority then took
appropriate action, as advised by the Department of Health, to ensure that the
water park was safe to be opened on 29 January.
Mr M. McGowan : So
it wasn't tested.
Mr J.H.D. DAY :
What the opposition does not understand —
Ms R. Saffioti interjected.
The SPEAKER : I do
not want anybody shouting out. Member for West Swan, you are on three calls.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : The MRA has been operating under the protocols and the direction of
the Department of Health on water testing. I think the opposition does
not understand that in testing for microorganisms, there is no instant result.
It is not like pH testing for acid levels or whatever in a swimming pool. A
positive result was identified on the Thursday before the opening. The MRA then
took appropriate action on ensuring that the water quality was appropriate for
public use on Friday, 29 January. The Department of Health issued a permit to
operate and a certificate of compliance, which I tabled earlier. If the
opposition did not get to see them or did not read them, they were issued by
the Department of Health on 29 January. The MRA fully complied with the
directions of the Department of Health.
