(1) I am aware that there have been a number of attempted suicides within the Balgo community. The Department for Child Protection (the Department) currently employs a Senior Community Child Protection Worker located in the Balgo community. This is an important on-the-ground resource to support the families and the community.
(2) I have been advised that the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department, through the Indigenous Justice Program, currently provides funding to the Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation to employ two youth workers in the Balgo community.
The Department will continue to liaise closely with Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation to identify and support the needs of families and young people in the community.
(2a) Not applicable.
(3) Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation has indicated to the Department that the building which burnt down last year was not being used by the Corporation for youth activities.
(3a) The Department is able to support the Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation regarding identifying appropriate funding options such as LotteryWest for a multi-function youth centre if required.
