FIREARMS LICENCES
562. Hon RICK MAZZA to the Attorney General
representing the Minister for Police:
A significant number of firearms
licence renewals which were previously free from any conditions for use are
currently being reissued with reference to conditions which are not prescribed
on the licence renewal and of which the licensee is not being advised.
(1) Can the minister advise the
rationale for those licences being subject to conditions of use?
(2) Can the minister advise how
firearms licensees can be informed of the conditions of use?
(3) If the use of
firearms on those licences is not in fact subject to conditions, why do the
licences state that they are?

On behalf of the Minister for
Police, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) In
preparation for integration with the National Firearms Interface, a notation is
required. Previously, if there were no existing conditions, the conditions
section would remain blank. To meet National Firearms Interface standards, a required
notation will state ''For use as approved only'', and no further
conditions have been imposed.
(2) No further
conditions have been placed upon the licensee and they may continue to use the
firearm as intended when originally licensed. If there were pre-existing
conditions, those will still apply and be noted in the conditions section. The
licensee would be aware of those conditions.
(3) See response to (1).
