GOOGLE TRANSIT
Can the minister advise the house about what initiatives the government is putting in place to give the ever-increasing number of travellers up-to-date information about using Perth’s public transport system? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for the question. In another Australian first for public transport, Perth residents are now able to use a new feature, Google Transit. I have a chart; I am very envious of the Minister for Education and Training’s charts! Several members interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : Excuse me! We are very efficient! We do not want to hear the opposition complaining about us having spent too much money! I am sure that all of the modern, fashionable, high-tech members of the opposition will be pleased to know that they will now be able to use the popular Google Maps technology. We have negotiated with Google for it to provide our Transperth information. It will be linked up with the very popular Google Maps technology through which people will be able to easily access the public transport scheduled routes, and plan trips. Western Australia is the only state in Australia that has done that. Google approached all states. WA is the only state in Australia that has a system that has such high-quality data and is integrated to the extent that it is to allow it to readily take up that opportunity and, therefore, offer this fabulous new service. Mr A.D. McRae : It tends to have a big impact on younger people. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : Absolutely. It is extremely positive for young people. It is equally interesting that in Western Australia many older, retired people have become technologically literate and, no doubt, will also be using this service. This is affirmation of the sort of feedback we are getting from across Australia. In 2006 four Melbourne academics published a report titled, “Putting the Public Interest Back into Public Transport” in which it nominated Perth’s public transport authority, along with those of Vancouver and Zurich, as the best transport systems in the world. Mr T. Buswell : When was that? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : It was in 2006. In 2007 there was an even more interesting report from the New South Wales opposition. It quoted the cities around the world that were really delivering high-quality transport systems. Its report said those cities were London, Zurich, Perth and Vancouver. The New South Wales opposition recognised that under a Western Australian Labor government one of the top public transport systems in the world has been created. Government members: Hear, hear!
