STATE ECONOMY
137. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Western
Australian Treasury Corporation's latest briefing note states that
state final demand in Western Australia went backwards by 0.3 per cent in the December
quarter and 0.5 per cent over the year, which is a direct contradiction of the
Premier's claim made on the ABC. Who do we believe, the Premier or WA
Treasury?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, I will
decide whether the question is okay or not. But be a bit more succinct next
time, Leader of the Opposition.

The economy is growing in Western Australia,
and each day we see confidence. As I said the other day, I was at Austal ships
on Thursday announcing 250 new jobs. I was in Kwinana on Friday announcing
another 800 jobs. We see the economy growing once again, with 33 000 jobs
created during our term in government.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Mr M. McGOWAN : It is true; I appeared
on ABC on Sunday night and I saw the Leader of the Opposition on Saturday
night. I note the headline ''Mike Nahan considers Western Power sale ''.
The Liberal Party has not learnt the lesson of the last election.
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : You are
selling Western Power.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Are they denying
they will sell Western Power?
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I am just
asking.
The
SPEAKER : There is just a wall of
noise. A question has been asked; the Premier is answering. I want to hear it.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I have quote
after quote here. As we know, if Western Power is sold, costs will go up —
Mrs L.M. Harvey interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Scarborough!
Mr
M. McGOWAN : — reliability
will go down and the return to the taxpayers will decrease and jobs will be
lost.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : That is the
Liberal Party's policy. I want that to be very clear. As we said prior
to the election, we will consult in respect of the TAB about what should
happen.
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Bateman!
Mr M. McGOWAN : We have done
exactly what we said we would do.
One thing we all know now is that the Liberal Party of Western
Australia is committed to the sale of Western Power and we will make sure the
people of Western Australia understand that at the next state election.
