Burswood Park motorplex
427. Ms Sandra Brewer to
the Premier:
I have a
supplementary question.
Dr Tony Buti: You started well!
Ms Sandra Brewer: I am biting my tongue.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Sorry, member for Cottesloe,
just wait. Members, I cannot hear what the member for Cottesloe is saying.
Ms Sandra Brewer: Has the Treasurer provided the
Premier with an update on the status of the business case?

I have not received
from the Treasurer the information that the member seeks. I will just say that this
is an incredible project. It is an opportunity to increase the tree canopy—
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt!
Mr Roger Cook: It is an opportunity to activate an
area between a football oval and a casino, with a greater tree canopy to have extra
amenity there.
Ms Sandra Brewer interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe!
Mr Roger Cook: It will have community facilities, including
an outdoor entertainment facility, a cycling facility—
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, this is your
side's question.
Ms Rita Saffioti interjected.
The Speaker: Treasurer!
Mr Roger Cook: This facility will have an outdoor
entertainment facility, a cycling track and basketball courts, amongst other
things.
Ms Sandra Brewer interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe!
Mr Roger Cook: It will be a great opportunity for the
community to have an active lifestyle in this area.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt, your
interjections are not required.
Mr Roger Cook: As
we have said, and as we campaigned during the election, this will also be the
staging point for a marquee motorsport event each year, which hundreds of
thousands of motorsport enthusiasts are really excited about. From that
perspective, I note that the Leader of the Opposition shifts and changes on
this. He shimmies and he shakes when it comes to his position on this.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members!
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Minister, thank you! Carry on, Premier.
Mr Roger Cook: We know that the Leader of the
Opposition secretly supports this.
Mr Lachlan Hunter: Not Patrick Gorman, though.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt, I am
calling you to order for the first time.
Mr Roger Cook: We know that when the Leader of the
Opposition was Lord Mayor, he had secret meetings about this very project.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Leader of the Opposition and
Minister for Sport and Recreation!
Mr Roger Cook: We know that deep in his heart of
hearts, he supports this project.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Premier, I would just like to
remind you that this is a supplementary.
Mr Roger Cook: Mr Speaker, I have hardly muttered a
word so far! Our friends across the aisle from me seem to be more interested in
answering the question than me.
We know that the
Leader of the Opposition supports this project. We know that he has told people
that he supports it. If he does not support it now, he will seek the
convenience to support it once it has been completed.
Mr Shane Love interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Nationals WA, the constant
interruptions make it difficult for the Premier to conclude his remarks. If you
keep interrupting, it is going to take longer.
Mr Roger Cook: This is what we have from the Leader of
the Opposition. He flips and flops depending on the last conversation he had.
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, this is not
your turn to talk.
Mr Roger Cook: His position changes depending on the
last person he has talked to.
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, I am calling
you to order for the first time. The constant interjections are not required.
Mr Roger Cook: When he talks to some groups, he says
that he hates motorsport, but in September 2021, when he was talking about
Targa, he said that motorsport was loved in Western Australia. This just goes
to the heart of what we are talking about. If the Leader of the Opposition were
Premier now, we know from his utterances that we would be spending billions on
the Commonwealth Games, we would be spending billions on his Coachella project
at Langley Park on the river's edge, and we would be watching as the Bell Tower
sailed out into the middle of the river under tow by "HMAS Basil" !
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Thank you, Premier.
Mr Roger Cook: We know that these sorts of projects
always invite conversations and disagreements, but the way that we have
consulted on this—
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members!
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members of the opposition! If I can
remember back, I think this was actually your question. Premier, if you could
conclude your remarks.
Mr Roger Cook: We
know that this will be a project for all Western Australians and not just for
Western Australians of one particular mindset. I think it will be really
exciting. I did hear from the interjections that those opposite reflected upon
one of my federal parliamentary colleagues. Quite frankly, I would rather any
of my colleagues compared with one of your parliamentary colleagues. Senator
Price is one of their number. She used to be one of the Nationals' number as
well. We know what a disgraceful embarrassment she is to the Liberal Party. I
think my friends opposite should reflect on that today, rather than making the incessant
interjections that we hear from them on a Thursday afternoon.
