PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN
I refer to the internal Princess Margaret Hospital for Children report titled “Gaps in Clinical Service”, which was tabled in this house on 9 May. In October last year, when Dr Gary Geelhoed publicly raised fears about overcrowding in the Princess Margaret Hospital emergency department and a shortage of beds, the minister said, according to my notes - I don’t believe that he’s told the truth and I don’t believe that he’s told the full story to the people of Western Australia. He said also - He has, in fact, misled the public. (1) Given that this report backs up 100 per cent what Dr Geelhoed was saying, and the “full story” is much worse, will the minister now apologise to Dr Geelhoed and clinical staff for his attempted character assassination and his own attempt to mislead the public? (2) Is the minister aware that the doctors whom he claims are pleased with the government response are in fact sceptical of the minister’s ability to deliver and want him to commit to increasing recurrent funding to address these issues, rather than use the $15 million that was allocated for hospital maintenance? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(2) Good try, member for Dawesville! I want to quote what the chairman of the Clinical Staff Association at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Dr David Baker, said on ABC Radio this morning. When he was asked what would be the first thing that he would say to Dr Fong and me, he said - . . . thank you very much, . . . “Thank you very much” was the response from Dr David Baker, the chairman of the Clinical Staff Association at Princess Margaret Hospital. He went on to say - I think you’ve acknowledged our concerns, but this is the first step, I think, in a concerted program to address all of these gaps. The member can come in here and say whatever he likes. I met 40 doctors from Princess Margaret Hospital earlier this week. I have had other meetings with the doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital. The member for Dawesville should get his facts right before he comes in here - Mr C.J. Barnett : They are your words. Mr J.A. McGINTY : Those are the words of Dr David Baker, the chairman of the Clinical Staff Association, who is saying “thank you very much” to us - Dr Fong and me - for the way in which we are addressing these questions. If I can go back to the first point that was raised by the member for Dawesville, the report did not do anything of the sort that the member has suggested today. With regard to the issues that were raised by Dr Gary Geelhoed - I have had numerous discussions with him since - I stand by what I said at the time. There is no question about that. However, there were broader issues at Princess Margaret Hospital that have now been addressed. The priority issues as determined by the Clinical Staff Association at the hospital are all being addressed. We will have an emergency department nursing staff increase as a result of the identification by the clinicians at Princess Margaret Hospital. We are actually getting on and doing it. We are not doing what has historically been the case; that is, people have said there is a mix of problems out there, but nobody has ever adequately addressed those questions. Dr K.D. Hames interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, member for Dawesville! Mr J.A. McGINTY : We will have the capacity to significantly increase the nursing staff in the emergency department at Princess Margaret Hospital. We will construct a new procedure room so that not only the treatment for the kids who need botox, but a range of other procedures that are taking place at that hospital, can be done in a way that will cut the waiting list for children at that hospital. Office space for clinicians is another thing that we will be providing. We will be employing extra nursing and other staff at the outpatient clinic so that we can get a significant increase in outpatient appointments through that hospital. That will have the effect of reducing the waiting time that kids currently experience at that hospital for their treatment. We will also be providing additional staff for the adolescent eating disorders service. We will progressively work through those matters with the clinicians. That is why they are pleased - that was my reading of the meeting. That is why Dr Baker was on the radio this morning saying “thank you very much”, and was welcoming the new approach, because they have never had that before.
