GOVERNMENT UTILITIES CHARGES
I have a supplementary question. Why will the Premier not deal with the fact that in the government’s own financial plan the government will collect over and above subsidies a net payment to Treasury of $2.7 million a day from its electricity and water utilities, or a total of $4 billion over the next four years? This is not a subsidy; this is what the government will collect. How does the Premier justify that given what this government has done to the people of Western Australia? The SPEAKER : Thank you, Leader of the Opposition! Mr C.J. BARNETT

This gives us a unique insight into the economics of the Leader of the Opposition. Run a utility at a loss—that was his method; that is what he did. Several members interjected. Mr C.J. BARNETT : Run a utility at a loss—that is the implication of the Leader of the Opposition’s question. Run the water authority at a loss, run Synergy at a loss, run Verve Energy at a loss and wonder why the state ends up in a mess. That is what members opposite did in government; this government will not do that.
