Schools—Discrimination
128. Hon Michelle Hofmann to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Education:
I refer to the fact
that 32 complaints were submitted by Western Australian families against
schools in relation to alleged discrimination and the recent comments of the
minister to the press reported in WAtoday of
27 February 2026 in the article titled "'Unacceptable' rise in complaints
ranks WA schools among worst in the nation".
(1) Who will assess the current training
and support for teachers and support staff?
(2) What is the timeline for this
assessment to be completed?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) As part of the state government's
response to the School Education Act review, the Department of Education has
committed to assess the training and support for public school staff who work
with students with disability to identify opportunities to strengthen practice.
The review will consider advice from external experts to ensure alignment with
contemporary evidence and research from school staff on the extent to which it
reflects their support needs and from the department's disability advisory
group to incorporate the perspectives of those with lived experience.
