(1-3) An extra $337,000 was provided by the Government to fund mental health training and research in the justice system.
Of this, $118,000 was allocated for at least 400 court staff and 100 workers from the Public Trustees' Office and the Office of the Public Advocate to undertake training to identify and respond to people with mental illness in the court system.
$72,000 will fund peer-support prisoners to undertake mental health first aid training to support other prisoners experiencing mental health problems.
$75,000 was allocated to update the
'Equality Before the Law Bench Book'
and assist judges in their decision making role in relation to mental illness.
A further $35,000 will be used for risk assessment training to mental health and prison counselling staff.
Furthermore, the funding will be used to research on needs of prisoners in WA. This research will aim to improve the Government's capacity to respond to mental health issues in the justice system.
The agreement relating to these projects has recently been signed by each agency and the Mental Health Commission transferred the funds to the Department of the Attorney General and the Department of Corrective Services at the end of March.
