I refer the minister to Labor’s pre-election policy called “Valuing Volunteers” which states that Labor will ensure active input from the volunteer sector when government policy decisions are being made that have the potential to impact on the worker volunteers. (1) Is the minister aware that many community-based health organisations rely heavily on volunteers such as the WA Consumer Advisory Group with 25 volunteers; Anglican Homes with 500 volunteers; Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill with 54 volunteers; the WA Association for Mental Health with 20 volunteers; and the Australian Red Cross with 3 398 volunteers? (2) Given that some of these organisations have suffered funding cuts under this Government and that many more are the target of continued funding cuts, what consultation has the minister undertaken with these volunteers? (3) Does the minister concede that the cancellation of community-based health organisations because of recent and future funding cuts might permanently erode Western Australia’s volunteer base? Ms S.M. McHALE

(1) Yes. (2) I think the member has her facts wrong. It is erroneous and mischievous to say that many of these organisations have had funding cuts. It is the sort of thing the Government expects from this Opposition. The number one priority of this Government is to get the Western Australian health system operating properly. The Opposition should be ashamed of itself for asking mischievous, erroneous questions like that. (3) No. This Government is recognised nationally as a leader in the support of volunteers and we are very proud of that. The member for Nedlands should stop her mischief.
