(1) Why did the minister not attend the public meeting held on 5 November 2003 in Jerramungup regarding electricity supply issues for the communities of Gnowangerup, Borden, Ongerup, Jerramungup, Ravensthorpe and Lake King? (2) Is a state cabinet decision required to make an investment of the magnitude identified by Western Power to improve the electricity network in the Gnowangerup, Jerramungup, Ravensthorpe area; and, if yes, why has Cabinet not considered the issue and provided a response to these communities? (3) If the issue of electricity supply is a Western Power problem, is the minister directing the senior executives of Western Power to instigate and attend a public meeting to explain to these communities the actions being taken to resolve the issues? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Minister for Energy has provided the following response. (1) The timing of the meeting conflicted with other commitments. The organisers did not negotiate with the minister’s office about alternative dates. In any case, a Western Power represent attended the meeting. However, the minister had an opportunity to meet briefly with the shire presidents of Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe during a visit to Esperance on Friday, 31 October 2003 to listen to their concerns. (2)-(3) Western Power determines its capital investment priorities.
