I refer to my grievance to the minister of 10 April on the issue of Mr Tony Elwood and his dispute with the Department of Environmental Protection over the Pioneer Concrete (WA) Pty Ltd quarry at Red Hill. I further refer to the minister’s response to that grievance in which she said, “I will follow up on the issues that have been raised.” (1) Is the minister aware that in the two months since the grievance, Mr Elwood has not been approached or contacted by her office or by the Department of Environmental Protection? (2) In the hope that this matter can be settled without further recourse to legal action, when can Mr Elwood expect to hear from the minister, her office or the department? Dr J.M. EDWARDS

I thank the member for the question. (1)-(2) I have received a report from the department about which I had some further questions. I then spoke to some of the people involved. Subsequently, I was still not satisfied, and earlier this week I asked one of my staff members to follow it up from a slightly different point of view. I thought there had been contact between my office and Mr Elwood, so I will check on that. I recall seeing a message to that effect, but I will follow it up. I want to get to the bottom of the issue. If I had been happier with the responses that I had received earlier, I would have responded immediately. Until I am comfortable with what I am told and with my evaluation of that, I will not be in a position to finally have the matter resolved.
