ongoing plan to create local jobs and diversify the economy.

outline to the house what the recent Defence Force naval fleet announcement

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the question. We share the
Australian Marine Complex, or the Henderson precinct, as it is often
referred to, in our electorates. I am very excited by the announcement because Western
Australia is pivotal to our nation's defence capability. Not only will
HMAS Stirling become the homeport for Australia's first
conventionally armed nuclear-powered sovereign submarines, but we also have
confirmation of a continuous naval shipbuilding program in Henderson. The
Deputy Prime Minister; Minister for Defence will join the Minister for Defence
Industry, Minister Paul Papalia, at the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson
later today to detail what the historic announcement means for the state. Let
me say this: the momentous Navy fleet overhaul places Western Australia firmly
at the forefront of the nation's defence shakeup. It emphasises WA's
role as a critical defence state. It is reward for my government's consistent advocacy to secure a pipeline of naval
shipbuilding work here in Western Australia. I take the opportunity to
commend the Minister for Defence Industry, Paul Papalia, himself a former naval
officer, for his seven-year campaign to bring a greater share of defence
contracting to WA. These things do not happen by accident; they come from hard
work and a strong vision to diversify our economy and make sure that we create
great sustainable Western Australian jobs and a determination to make sure that
we bring those opportunities to Western Australia. Over the next decade, this
will deliver 1 200 highly skilled, highly paid for Western Australian jobs and
generate new opportunities for local industries.
The plan will see eight new general
purpose frigates built at the Henderson precinct and enable a pathway to build
six new large optionally crewed surface vessels. It is a win for Australia, but
it is a particularly great win for Western Australia.
This is a key part of our Diversify WA strategy to make sure that we are
leveraging the great capabilities and competitive advantage we have in our
resources sector to create great opportunities in other industries.
Defence industries represent a significant opportunity for Western Australia to
continue to diversify. The Diversify WA plan is coming to fruition. It is great
to see job-generating projects really starting to take hold. I thank the
federal government for its support and for recognising that Western Australia
has the skills, determination and capability to create these sorts of global industries. Western Australia will be a key
element of Australia's Defence Force capability shakeup . It is a
wonderful day, and I commend the minister and thank the federal government.
