I refer the minister to his answer to my question on notice 636 of Tuesday, 25 June 2002 in which he refused to make available details of his use of ministerial air charter on the basis that providing such an answer would take too much time by diverting his ministerial staff away from their normal duties. I further refer the minister to The West Australian of Thursday, 10 October 2002 in which he is quoted as saying in reference to the Lord Mayor of Perth - “Like all of us who are elected into office, we have got the task to try to make available to the community relevant information about the way we serve in public office . . . I further refer the minister to an article in The West Australian of Monday, 7 October 2002, which quotes him as saying - . . . in the interests of open and accountable government, Dr Nattrass should make his explanations clear to the electors of the City of Perth. In view of the above comments and in view of the minister’s current approach to accountability, will he now provide me with an answer to my question about his air travel, or can we expect that he will continue to demonstrate his hypocrisy by refusing to abide by the principles he demands of others? The PRESIDENT: The member might find part of that question in order. Hon TOM STEPHENS

I thank the Leader of the Opposition for his question. I think that in the answer I gave to the question to which he has referred, I quoted answers that the current Leader of the Opposition used to give when he was a minister. I will look at the issue again, I will consider it and I will provide the member with a response.
