1233. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Racing and Gaming:
(1) How many greyhounds whelped in
2014–2015 went on to race?
(2) Since 20 October 2015, how many
greyhounds were rehomed —
(a) by the Greyhounds as Pets
program;
(b) by other organisations; and
(c) directly by breeders or trainers?
(3) How many were euthanised —
(a) because they were not suitable
for racing;
(b) because they were deemed unfit
for rehoming; and
(c) because of training or track
injuries?
(4) How many
greyhounds have been imported from and exported to other states since 2012?

(1) As at 31
October 2016, 587 greyhounds were whelped, 207 of which raced or participated
in qualifying trials. Many pups whelped in the latter part of that year were
still too young to race.
(2) As at 31 October 2016 —
(a) 163 greyhounds were retired to
GAP;
(b) 274 greyhounds were retired to
other adoption agencies; and
(c) 124
greyhounds were retired as a pet to owners, trainers or third parties and 55
greyhounds were retired for breeding purposes.
(3) For the period from 20 October
2015 to 31 October 2016 the figures are —
(a) 96;
(b) 88; and
(c) 187.
(4) From the
OzChase platform, which Western Australia joined in November 2013, eight
greyhounds were exported from Western Australia in 2012 and 294 were imported.
In 2013, 26 were exported and 450 were imported. In 2014, 47 were exported and
449 imported. In 2015, 58 were exported and 428 were imported. As at 31 October
2016, 53 have been exported and 398 have been imported.
